**About Our Society . . .**

THE London & North Middlesex Family History Society (formerly North Middlesex Family History Society) was formed in 1978 to bring together those people living in the area, or whose ancestors lived in the area, who are interested in researching their family history wherever that might be found. In October 2001 the members of the Westminster & Central Middlesex FHS (formerly  Central Middlesex FHS) joined with the London & North Middlesex FHS to form the present Society, thus widening the area of Greater London (north of the River Thames) covered by the Society.  The name was adopted in March 2004 to reflect the coverage of the larger Society.  The Society's area now comprises: the City of London, the City of Westminster and the London Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Camden, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow and Islington, together with parts of Ealing and Hillingdon.  The London Boroughs were created in 1965 under the Local Government Act.  Note that the London Borough of Barnet includes High (or Chipping) Barnet, East Barnet and Totteridge which were historically in Hertfordshire.  Beginners and experienced researchers are invited to join us.  New members receive an introductory information pack.

Monthly meetings are held by five branches at which talks of genealogical or local interest are given.  Each branch has its own resource collection which can be consulted by members at the meetings and there are also experienced members from whom advice and assistance may be sought.  Members are welcome to attend at all five branches.

The Society publishes a quarterly journal entitled Metropolitan free to members, containing news of Society activities and project work, articles and correspondence.  Members may publish requests for research help in the Help! section of the journal or as Letters to the Editor.

The Society participates in a worldwide exchange of journals with many of the societies which are fellow members of the FFHS.  These journals are available at some Branch meetings, making the work of others available and enabling useful contacts to be made.

In common with most other family history societies we play our part in transcribing and indexing public records, both national and local, which have a bearing on family history.  This work adds to the number of indexes and other aids which facilitate family history research.

A list of Society Publications of microfiche and booklets is produced twice a year, as is  a separate Booklist of titles published by other societies and companies.

A combined Conference and AGM is held in Central London, usually in March.  Branches participate in local Borough events to attract public interest and the Society has a presence at several Family History Fairs.

The Society is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies, Friends of Islington Museum, Friends of TNA and affiliated to the Enfield Arts Network.
